Can I Bring My Pet on a Trip to Mexico?
YES! With a forewarning!
Taking a pet into Mexico is likely to be easy. It’s bringing your pet back across the border to the United States that is more difficult.
Starting in 2024 the US Center For Disease Control (CDC) has established new requirements.
** Important CDC Requirements for Pets Entering the USA **
The US Department of Agriculture has additional guidance: USDA Guidance for Pets in Mexico
After you have covered your government regulation obligations there are some common sense guidelines to heed. Remember the following:
Bring your pet’s favorite food, cat litter, and medications, including anti-flea/tick medication, heartworm, etc.
-
- You cannot bring birds/reptiles back into the USA!
- The US border agents often frown on bringing pet food back into the US even when bought in the US, so you do not have a lot of leftover food when you cross the border. The fear is the food may contain agricultural pests or other contamination.
- During Chapter 8 rallies we require dogs and cats to be on a reasonable length leash. In addition, no pets are allowed in areas where food is served or in a group setting.
- Mexican laws do not recognize service animals and their entrance into some facilities may be prohibited. Have a Plan B for keeping your pets safe where and whenever you must leave them behind.
