Weather in Baja Mexico

Chapter 8 Mexican Connection Weather in Baja Mexico

The winter months are the best time to visit Mexico. Chapter 8 primarily runs its rallies in the first four months of the year in the northern half of the country.
    • Coastal areas (both coasts) are hot and humid in the summer, except on the Pacific side of Baja where weather is usually mild to chilly.
    • The Desert areas in Baja are very hot in the summer months.
    • Central Mexico is elevated on a plateau 4-7000’ high and it can be quite chilly.
Mexican Climate vs. Weather  — Is there really a distinction?
Yes! The saying goes that climate is to personality as weather is to mood, Mexico’s mood can change each day. Mexico’s personality is overall tropical with a rainy and a dry season, but little temperature fluctuation) (50°F and 90°F throughout the year.) Climate changes across México are mostly due to the differences in latitude and longitude as well as altitude.
However, depending on the source there are actually four or seven climate zones in Mexico. These are referred to as:
  1.  “Tierra caliente” (hot zone)
  2.  “Tierra templada” (temperate zone)
  3.  “Tierra fría” (cold zone)
  4.  “Tierra helada” (ice zone).
      • The hot zones are the Yucatan Peninsula and the popular resorts of the Riviera Maya.
      • The temperate zone is located at an altitude between 900 and 1,800 meters (3,000 to 6,000 feet) above sea level. In this zone the days are pleasantly warm and the nights are characteristicaly cool.
      • The cold zone consists of destinations above 1800 meters (6,000 feet) such as Mexico City.
      • The ice zone is areas above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) where the average temperature is about 9 °C (48 °F). There are no populated villages or towns in Mexico at that elevation, unlike the US (e.g. Breckenridge, Aspen, and Vail, Colorado.)
Here are the average temperatures and rainfall amounts for the northern and southern halves of the Baja Peninsula.
